Upper Mustang hidden gem of the Himalayas, waiting to be explored, Protected from modernism by its rugged terrain and ancient traditions, this mystical land offers adventurers a journey back in time, through ancient walled cities, sacred monasteries, and dramatic landscapes unlike anywhere else on Earth.

The Upper Mustang trek is a unique and extraordinary experience, immersing trekkers in a world of unparalleled beauty and cultural richness. The Upper Mustang trek begins in the vibrant city of Pokhara, where trekkers are greeted by the peaceful streets and colorful markets, the backdrop of Annapurna mountain ranges and the clamming Phewa Lake.  From here, a short flight to Jomsom sets the stage for the adventure ahead, offering breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.

Yes, the real adventure begins with a scenic flight to Jomsom, a bustling town perched on the edge of the Kali Gandaki River. From here, the trek winds its way through barren landscapes, carved by centuries of wind and water erosion. The stark beauty of the terrain is offset by the warm hospitality of the local Thakali people, who welcome trekkers into their homes and tea houses along the way.

As the trail ascends, trekkers are treated to panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and deep river valleys below. Along the way, ancient caves and monasteries offer glimpses into the region’s rich cultural heritage, while traditional prayer flags flutter in the mountain breeze, casting blessings upon all who pass.

One of the highlights of the Upper Mustang trek is the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, the capital of the former Kingdom of Mustang. Stepping through the city gates is like stepping back in time, as narrow paths lead to ancient palaces, monasteries, and temples decorated with intricate carvings and vibrant murals. Here, trekkers have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture, attending traditional festivals and ceremonies that have been celebrated for centuries.

Beyond Lo Manthang, the trek continues to the fabled land of the “Lost Kingdoms” – remote villages and settlements that have remained untouched by the passage of time. Each day brings new discoveries, from hidden caves and ancient rock paintings to natural wonders like the Dhakmar cliffs and the sacred Chhoser caves.

As the Upper Mustang trek draws to a close, trekkers descend back to Jomsom, their hearts and minds filled with memories of an unforgettable journey through the Upper Mustang region. From here, a short flight returns them to Pokhara, where they can reflect on their experiences in the tranquil beauty of Phewa Lake and the surrounding mountains.

The Upper Mustang trek is more than just a physical journey – it is a spiritual and cultural journey that leaves a lasting impression on all who undertake it. Memorable first trekking in Nepal – Jomson Muktinath Trek

This was my first trekking experience in Nepal and I am glad that we engaged Mountain World Treks as our guide. Sali and his team are the greatest and will always try to go above and beyond to meet your expectations.

Our guides Sudip and Sandip were extremely knowledgeable of the area and always made sure that we were safe. Our porters were not only strong but super attentive to our needs. We are truly blessed to have these group of individuals taking care of us during our trip.

The views along our trek were breathtaking, as we get to enjoy the greeneries of the Annapurna range and the stunning red desert of the lower mustang. All in, I would say this is a less strenuous trek and would highly recommend to anyone who would like to give trekking in Nepal a shot.

Will come back again to explore other treks and will surely engage Sali and his team again.
