Kathmandu, August 26, 2026. A sudden flash flood swept through the Timure and Syabrubesi areas of the Rasuwa district this morning, damaging markets, hydropower infrastructure, and settlements along the Bhote Koshi River. Syabrubesi is the trailhead town most trekkers pass through on the way to Langtang Valley.
Flash Flood Hits Rasuwa: What happened
According to the Rasuwa District Administration Office, a sudden surge entered the Bhote Koshi river, which flows into Nepal from the Tibet side of the border, at around 9 am local time. Local resident Ajay Shrestha, who watched the water rise, said it looked as though a dam upstream had burst.
Rasuwa Chief District Officer Narendra Pariyar told local media that skies over the district headquarters were clear and there had been no rainfall that morning, ruling out a simple rain-driven flood. Officials say they have not yet confirmed whether the surge was caused by a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) upstream or another source. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology is examining satellite data alongside Chinese authorities to trace the origin.
The flood struck the Chilime Hydropower Project and damaged other hydropower infrastructure in the area, according to local residents. The helipad in Timure was also swept away, forcing a rescue helicopter dispatched by Altitude Air to turn back to Kathmandu without landing. The pilot reported that the village of Timure was barely visible from the air and that the river appeared to have “burst its banks” suddenly.
How far the flood has traveled
By late morning, the surge had moved downstream through the Trishuli River and reached Galchhi in the Dhading district, according to a 10:51 am update from the Flood Forecasting Division. Authorities expect the flood to reach Mugling within a few hours and have urged immediate evacuation of settlements and market areas along the Trishuli River, including areas along the Prithvi Highway and the Mugling-Narayanghat Highway.
High alert has been extended to Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan districts. Residents and business owners along the riverbanks, including hydropower project staff, have been told to move to higher ground and away from the water immediately.
Government response
Prime Minister Balendra Shah has called a National Security Council meeting to assess the disaster and coordinate the response. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority is meeting separately at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Two Nepal Army helicopters with medical teams have been deployed for search and rescue, with private helicopter companies on standby. Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, and district administration offices in the affected areas have intensified rescue and relief operations. Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police have halted vehicles bound for Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Chitwan, and Dhading as a precaution.
A high-level team led by Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle and senior customs officials is coordinating with the Timure Customs Office, located near the Nepal-China border, on search and rescue efforts.
Casualty figures and the full extent of the damage have not been confirmed.
Is the Langtang Valley trek affected?
The flood struck the Bhote Koshi river and the Timure-Rasuwagadhi border strip north of Syabrubesi, plus the Trishuli river downstream. Syabrubesi itself, where the Kathmandu road ends and the Langtang trekking trail begins, has reported damage to markets and infrastructure. The Langtang trail proper climbs east from Syabrubesi through a separate valley toward Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, and Kyanjin Gompa, roughly 3,430 m (11,253 ft) at Langtang Village.
